Of course, every burger tastes better at the campground but there are some tips you can apply to make those burgers even better.
#1 Chill the meat
Your burgers will taste so much better if you start them out cold. Chilling the meat will also chill the fat and that makes the burger nice and firm. Don’t take them out of the frige until you’re ready to drop them on the grill and they won’t get mushy on you.
#2 Dimple the burger so it doesn’t puff up while cooking
We’ve all experienced having our beautiful burgers turn into mini footballs as they cook on the grill. You can avoid that by pressing your thumb into the center of the burger. This little trick will keep the burger from puffing up and becoming more like a loaf than a patty.
#3 Don’t smush the burger with your spatula
It’s soooo tempting. We want to flip it, press it, flip it, press it again, and repeat as necessary. This is all you need to dry your burgers out before they even hit your plate. Pressing those juices out of the grill just drains them of the good stuff. Fight the urge to move them around. Flip them once and done.
#4 Let the burgers rest for 1 minute after they cook
This allows time for the juices to contract back into the meat fibers instead of leaking into your bun and turning it into mush. We know it’s hot and looks so tasty but just give it a minute before you put it on the bun and start adding all the fixings.
That should do it. It really is pretty simple. We wish you the best, most memorable burgers of your life on your next camping stay.
